Perkins Teacher Mary Darr Named District 2 Teacher Of The Year.Mary Darr, a Gifted Intervention Specialist at Briar Middle School, has been selected as the 2020 State Board of Education-District 2 Teacher of the Year, announced the Ohio Department of Education. The selection means that Mrs. Darr now is a candidate for the 2020 Ohio Teacher of the Year award to be announced later this year.

Mrs. Darr has been in education for more than 30 years, including 22 years in the Perkins Local School District. She currently teaches gifted English and social studies in Grades 6-8 at Briar Middle School in Perkins Township. In addition to her teaching duties, she advises the Briar Academic Challenge, Mock Trial, and the Power of the Pen teams.

She also serves as the program coordinator for the Perkins Local Schools Resident Educator mentoring program, and is a member of the Perkins Local Schools Local Professional Development Committee, the Perkins Local Schools Gifted Advisory Committee, and the Ohio Reading Content Advisory Committee for Grade 8 English Language Arts.

Perkins Schools Superintendent Todd Boggs welcomed this prestigious news for a very special teacher in the Perkins School community.

“Mrs. Darr is so deserving, yet quietly humble as she provides so many rich learning opportunities for our Perkins Schools children,” Mr. Boggs said. “Our Perkins family is so happy for her and honored to have her. We are grateful to the State Board of Education for this recognition.”

Candidates for Ohio Teacher of the Year must be licensed Ohio educators with a minimum of five years teaching experience and currently employed at an Ohio public school in pre-kindergarten to grade 12, work directly with students a minimum of 50 percent of their contracted time, have not been a previous regional or state Teacher of the Year honoree, and plan to continue teaching.

The Teacher of the Year honoree is an expert in their field who guides students of all backgrounds and abilities to achieve excellence, collaborates with colleagues, students, and families to create a school culture of respect and success, deliberately connects the classroom and key stakeholders to foster a strong community at large, demonstrates leadership and innovation in and outside of the classroom walls that embodies lifelong learning, and expresses themselves in an engaging and articulate way.

Later in July, a committee appointed by the Ohio Department of Education will review the applications from the district Teachers of the Year, and narrow the field to five finalists for Ohio Teacher of the Year. The finalists will be interviewed by the committee, which includes educators, parents, community and business representatives from across Ohio.

The 2020 Ohio Teacher of the Year will be announced in August or September.

Mrs. Darr received a Bachelor’s of Science in Elementary Education from Bowling Green
State University, a Master’s in Education in Literacy from Ashland University, and
Certification in Gifted Education from Cleveland State University. She also is a Perkins High School alumni.
